Links in Email: How to Code Them, How to Phrase Them

One of the most important metric driving the success of your email marketing or newsletter campaign is click-through rate. It doesn’t take a great deal of intimate understanding to know that if you can’t convince subscribers or readers to click from your email to your website or landing page, you can’t monetize them. Since, in almost all cases, the end goal of your email marketing campaign will be increased revenue either through transactions or page impressions, driving traffic from the email to the webpage or landing page is absolutely essential. The use of links in email is the primary driver of traffic funneling from your email to your webpage.

Content and Calls to Action Matter!

We don’t want you to read this section and think that links in email are the only thing that matters in terms of driving traffic from an email to a landing page. If that were the case, there wouldn’t be any reason to send an email that included anything but links! The quality of your copy and its ability to excite and incentivize users to click certainly matters. So do the offers that you may promote in an email marketing piece. Finally, writing and using good calls-to-action both around and in the content of your links can make a significant difference between an average click-through rate and an outstanding click-through rate. All of the elements of your email template design and content work combine to improve your click-through rate. However, there are some tried and true elements to keep in mind!

Images and Links in Email

We discussed this previously when discussing the best practices for embedding images in email , but as a general rule you do not want to use images as a way to indicate to readers that they should click something. Graphic buttons that say “buy now” or “click here” work great on web pages. However, since many email service providers do not automatically load images when an email loads, your readers may never see the “click here” or “buy now” or “join now” or “sign-up” button and may actually not know where to click. Make all of the images in your email links just in case they don’t load and users click them. Also, and more importantly, make sure that your main links in email are always text links. If you must use an image link (for example, if your design department insists on it), be sure to have a text link directly beneath it.

Formatting Links in Email

It’s incredibly important that your links in email both stand out from the text around them as well as appear in a way that users immediately recognize as links. The most “fool-proof” way to accomplish this is to use a traditional link-style. That, of course, means using a blue, underlined font. It’s also a great idea if all of your links are bolded. If you can’t use a blue underlined font, it’s strongly suggested that you, at a minimum, use an underlined font. Web users are trained to understand that “underline means link” even if the color is not blue. Bolding your links will help them stand out.

If your design standards don’t underline or bold links, it’s strongly suggested that you make an exception within your links in email. Again, even more-so than on a web page, the funneling of users from your email to a website or landing page where you can monetize them is the ultimate key to success.

Finally, if your web style guide involves denoting links by changing their color or style when a user passes his or her mouse over the links, do not replicate that in your email. CSS use in an email template, which would be required to create that effect, can breakdown in various email service providers. Additionally, you’re then relying on users and readers to actively mouse over your email text in order to find links. You want the links to “pop” and be obvious immediately when a user scans your email so that he or she can transition from the email to the web page as quickly as possible.

What to Say in Your Links in Email

Your links in email should be your email call-to-action. Don’t make links in email single words, and certainly don’t make them too long. Nothing is harder on the eyes than three lines of bolded, underlined link text! In short, the best links are ones that tell users what they will be doing when they click them. ”Buy Now.” “Click Here.” “Join for Free.” A strong, brief, clear call to action is the best text for your link!

Where to Place Links in Email

There’s really no set rule as to where to place links in email, but there are some basic trips and tricks that can increase click-through rate.

Don’t put links within big blocks of text. Instead, use your text to lead up to the link and then separate the link with a paragraph break so that it stands out.

Don’t put too much space between text and an associated link. You want users to understand that the link is related to the text.

Don’t put links in headlines – the conflicting styles may confuse users.

Make sure you have at least one, if not more, links in the top two inches of your email template. You want users who don’t scroll below the preview pane to still have opportunities to click through to your webpage or landing page.

As noted above, make sure that all images are also links.

We’ll also discuss below using permanent and static links in the header, footer or side column of your email.

Density of Links in Email

The question of how many links to put into your email template can be a tricky question. On the one hand, the raw numbers game says that you want as many links as possible. The more opportunities that you give readers to click-through to your website, the more likely they are to do it. However, if you load an email up with too many links, you risk triggering spam filters. Finally, if you put too many links into an email, you’ll ultimately deteriorate the readability of the text in the email. That may not sound like a situation that could really harm you, but you may be surprised at how important text can be in selling your product or service.

A safe rule of thumb is no more than one link per every fifty words of text. However, there’s no hard-and-fast rule here, either. Your best bet is to start with fewer links in your email templates and then continue to add links with each send until you reach a click-through rate that is your desired click-through rate.

Permanent and Static Links in Email

Many email templates are designed using permanent and static links in email header, footer, and side bar. These links may be navigational clones of your primary site to help create familiarity with users between the site and the email. They may be links to social network elements that you want to persistently promote.They may also be links to customer service or other pages on your website that provide information that users consistently search for. Designing your email template with these types of persistent links can dramatically improve your click-through rate. The information or pages that the links drive to are content or destination pages that you’ve identified as high user interest. In addition, these persistent or permanent links also increase the number of links in email , which, in turn, increases the number of opportunities that your readers have to click through. There’s really no downside!

The same rules apply to persistent or static links as well. Don’t trap them in images. This is true even if you are trying to clone your website’s navigation within your email template and the navigation on the website uses images. Make a temporary presentation adjustment and design something “close” to your site’s navigational structure that uses text instead of images. The only best practice noted above that does not necessarily apply to permanent or static links in your email template is in regards to formatting. While you still want your links to look like links, because these are not your primary linksyou may not want to bold them or make them “pop” too much. You do not want your static, persistent and navigational links to detract from the offers or information in the email, so it’s perfectly fine to use a more subtle visual approach with them.

Links in Email and Spam

Too many links in email can trigger spam filters and alerts. We’ve already suggested that, if you’re just starting your email marketing program, you begin with templates that have fewer links and then build your way up. Another technique for determining how many links you can have in your email without creating a spam problem is to do some testing pre-send. Create an email with as many links as you want and test send it to your seed or test addresses. If it goes into the spam or junk folder (and if you’re sure that there wasn’t anything else in the content of the email that would have created a spam problem), then remove half of the links and test it again. You may find that you’re suddenly inbox-ready just by removing some links!

Links in the Text Version of Your Email

Obviously, it’s not possible to put actual links in the text-only version of your email. Whether your text-only version is the singular version of your email or whether you’re sending a multi-part message with both html and text components, it’s worth it to take some time to clean up the urls in your text-only version.

Here are a handful of best practices:

Keep URLs Short and Memorable: From a text-only email, you’ll be relying on people remembering, typing-in, or copying and pasting urls into a web browser to get to your webpage or landing page. Keep urls short and easy-to-remember to optimize visits to your webpage or landing page from your text-based email.

Space URLs Out From the Text: Because you can’t use any type of formatting to make your urls stand out in a text-based email, make sure that there is a full paragraph break between the text above and the text below a url so that users can easily spot and find it.

Put Your URL at the Top and the Bottom of the Email: You’ll want to make any urls from the email easy to find in the text-based version. Make sure there is one above the fold and one at the bottom of the email so that users can find the destination url quickly and easily at the beginning or the end.

Since the likes of Facebook and Twitter have come onto the scene, people (including many self proclaimed experts) are now talking about the end of the humble website – it’s nonsense. For the foreseeable future your website will continue to be the most valuable asset your business owns.

Think about that for a moment. Your website is the most valuable asset you have. I bet you’ve never thought about it in those terms before. But why not? You use it to sell your products and services. You probably send partners and suppliers there for information about your company. Perhaps you even use it as an online portal through which your staff can interact, store data and organise themselves. It is, in effect, your office and shop combined. It can be as vast as you want and contain just about anything, and yet you’re telling me that you’ve never attached a monetary value to it?! Well now is the time to start.

You can’t polish a …

If you’re a new business then you obviously need to start afresh, but what if you have an existing site? Should you begin all over again or just accept its imperfections and tweak it into shape? Well that really depends on a couple of things:

  • Design – how bad we are talking? Look at your competitors sites. I assume that the reason you are reading this is because you want the best online presence in your market. How does yours look compared to theirs? Be honest…
  • What does it allow you to do? Nowadays every business needs a solid Content Management System (CMS*). As you will shortly learn, your website is a constant work in progress. You always need to be able to expand and enhance it. Can you add new pages? Can you add images and videos? If your system doesn’t allow you to do these basic things yourself then it’s time to start again.

Now the more SEO* savvy among you may be thinking “What about the search engines? My existing site has been around for years and developed a high level of authority in the eyes of Google.” If so, nice spot! This is a really important point but never fear – a good SEO expert will know exactly what to do to retain as much of this authority as possible.

Bespoke or open source?

Right, I’m guessing there’s a good chance these terms might require a little explanation:

  • Bespoke websites – You pay a web developer to create your site from absolute scratch. Every last detail will be designed to suit your exact requirements.
  • Open source websites – You pay a designer to take an existing CMS and (with a combination of templates and plug-ins*) design a custom skin that appears unique to your brand.

Now before I begin attacking bespoke options I will concede that there is definitely a place for them. For those organisations that require complex e-commerce solutions, custom tools or high levels of security then unquestionably a bespoke website is appropriate. However, for every one appropriate bespoke website sold by an agency, there are five that are mis-sold. Most businesses get on absolutely fine with open source solutions.

Benefits of an open source website include:

  • Cost – they are almost invariably a fraction of the cost of a bespoke site.
  • Quality – there is a misconception that open source means you are compromising on quality. The whole point with open source is that communities of experts have collaborated on creating the best possible solutions to universal challenges.
  • Plug-ins - as mentioned, your website should be constantly evolving. This means new tools, widgets, designs, etc. These open source communities are constantly releasing new plug-ins that will allow you to build on your website with the click of a button. Sometimes you have to pay a very small amount and other times they are free. To put that in perspective, if you were to have such tools created for you from scratch you could be looking at thousands.

A few open source options include Joomla, WordPress and Drupal. We ourselves use WordPress like it’s going out of fashion. In fact 14% of all websites are now WordPress based and consequently the community is huge and full of kind hearted folk offering more support and plug-ins than ever!

That’s all you need to know. You are probably never going to design a website yourself, but you need to know that if you have modest website requirements and your designer scoffs at the idea of an open source solution, it’s either because he doesn’t keep up to speed with online developments or he is trying to squeeze a few more quid out of you. Either way it’s time to find a new designer.

Ecommerce

While ecommerce sites are often more complicated (and therefore frequently require a tailored approach), we would still always recommend considering an open source solution. There are some modest WordPress ecommerce plug-ins, but the Rolls Royce of the open source ecommerce world is Magento. The community edition is free of charge and an experienced developer will be able to do just about anything you want.

By using an open source model one of the biggest advantages is that you are not tied into that one developer. Anyone can access the code and make changes, which is critical with an ecommerce site that will continually need updating.

Website Actions

  • Decide whether or not you need a new site or whether your existing one can simply be improved. It must have a solid CMS
  • If you do decide to have a new site, then find a web designer that can show you examples of some nice, web 2.0 style CMS sites they have created. For a basic site using an open source platform you shouldn’t be charged more than a couple of grand. For e-commerce it will probably be more like ВЈ3k-ВЈ7k. For completely bespoke solutions there is no limit so do your research and get a handful of quotes.

11 Ways Women Can Ace Video Interviews

1)   Don’t use closed body language. Carol holds her hands clasped in front of her heart, in front of her knees…she appears insecure and closed off. (This woman ran Yahoo, so she doesn’t need to be insecure in front of anyone!)

2)   Don’t tilt your head low. It is a sign of lower rank and submission. Hold your head parallel with the ground, even at the chin—not high, not low.

3)   Don’t rush yourself. From the first question, which Carol answers with a  couple of umm’s, she is not giving herself time to answer. This comes across as submissive and potentially “scared” instead of strong. I could suspect that Carol simply wants to answer the journalist’s questions and is doing her best to “provide” on demand. But she does it at the sacrifice of her personal brand. Pause and take the breath you need to gather your thoughts.

Here’s how you do it right in new media firms interviews

Here’s an example of what you should do on video interviewers: Watch Denise Morrison, CEO of Campbell Soup.

What did she do right?

1)   Do tell stories. Denise had a couple stories “primed” for this. And she got on camera, looked the camera in the lens, and spoke her piece.

2)   Do keep talking. In the video,  Denise wasn’t asked about goal-setting, was she?  But she wanted to talk about this and so she kept talking straight through, not allowing the journalist to interrupt her with a further question. The person who does the most talking often appears to be the biggest authority. Denise handles this well. This is a huge point–go to a camera with a message, and let nothing get between you and that lens in delivering.

3)   Do look at the camera. Looking closely at the interviewer allows them to read you closely, and interrupt easily. Looking at the camera connects you to the camera person and the audience, and puts you more in charge of your experience. The interviewer is “shut out.”

Let’s put it all together with a third and final video—Julie Steinberg on FIN being interviewed on Mean Street.

When you watch this, you see Julie playing directly to her interviewer, and allowing him to dominate the interview. Her submissive behavior  includes asking the interviewer to teach her how to play golf. The rather bold and admittedly arrogant interviewer talks over her—and she allows that. In fact, she speeds up to try to “get a word in edgewise.”

What could you do in this tough situation?

1)   Slow down. Julie speeds up, but that makes her seem flightier. Her great content is literally blurred by her speed of delivery. Listen to how the interviewer speaks two to three times as slowly as Julie does. Slowing down is a power move.

2)   Don’t allow the journalist to run the interview. Julie is the expert here. When the interviewer takes the question in another direction, interrupt and redirect. You’re the expert. Redirecting is a power move.

3)   Don’t let the journalist frame the story. The frame—or context—of the story is negotiable. As the person being interviewed, if you’re a leader, you have to frame the debate. That means your worldview dominates.

4)   Don’t ask the journalist questions. Julie asks, Are you a good golfer? I assume she’s trying to turn the interview around and take control, but question-asking is a passive-aggressive way to do that. The right approach is reframe. For example the journalist asks, “If you were a male CEO…” Dumb question, right? Julie is a great journalist, and neither a male NOR a CEO. So to call “bullshit” on the journalist is one of the best ways to reframe.  Take over—and deliver your message.  You can do that by saying, “Great question, but what’s even more relevant is…” Making statements is a power move.

5)   Never forget the audience behind the camera. When you are on camera, like Julie, it can be tempting to speak TO the interviewer, which she does. But your audience  (often millions) is behind the lens. Speak to them. By looking INTO the lens, and through the camera, you remind yourself of your real audience. Eye contact with the lens is a terrific power move for today’s video interview. social media public relations

Now, when you are creating your advert for Facebook you really have to consider the graphics that you are using. Making them attractive and eye catching is extremely important as a lot of people are on Facebook to communicate and usually ‘black out’ the adverts.

If you lack graphic design skills there are many sites on the internet where you can find graphic design professionals who will create your adverts for a reasonable fee. An example of a great marketplace is Freelancer.com.

After creating the graphic it is usually best to use text that is formed as a question. An example would be, if you were advertising for a car company, ‘what would your friends say if they saw you in this?!’ At this point since Facebook is a network built on ‘friend’ relationships then you will have gotten their attention.

Right after that placing a simple call to action such as ‘come check out our site and you might just find out!’ would most probably result in a click.

Another good idea is to create a dedicated Facebook fan page for your website or service and refer people to that first. This is because whenever someone clicks ‘like’ it shows on their status update which all of their friends will see. In many cases this will induce their friends to click on the link to see what the page is all about and if they like it then you’ve just got a ton more free advertising.

The last thing that I will say about Facebook advertising is that you have to think laterally with your advertisements.

What I mean by ‘laterally’ is that on Google Adwords you are typing in the exact words or phrases that you expect your customers to type in while on Facebook you are specifying the interests, or things that they’ve ‘liked’, which you think they will have.

This means that if you are advertising a new make up product then advertising to people only interested in ‘cosmetics’ will result in some clicks but not as many as if you advertised to people interested in ‘Sex and The City’ as well.

If you are interested in what you are advertising then simply look at your interests and consider which ones would be shared by the most number of people and use those.

All in all Facebook is a wonderful marketplace and due to allowing graphics adverts that really stand out can be made. Much more than just the text method used on Google Adwords.

Instead of having your Facebook fan page being titled ‘ab shredder extreme’ you would have ‘The Best Ab Work Out - Ab Shredder Extreme.’

This would, in a couple of days or weeks, have you ranked number one and now when people search in Google for ‘the best ab work out’ they would find your page on the first page of the results.

From there you can direct people to your service, affiliate offer or website.

2. Keep New Content.

Even if the new pieces of content are just links to external pages, updating your Facebook fan page is extremely important. It shows fans and new viewers alike that you actually care about keeping in touch and providing them with information and entertainment.

One post or link a day is plenty but if you can do more then it would be better.

Also do try to make the links or posts interesting and informative. Some funny links would also do well because people are prone to share that on their walls or status updates which would lead to more people clicking through to your page.

3. Network.
